Mont Wright Mine in Quebec, was the largest iron ore-producing mine in Canada, producing approximately 22 million tonnes of iron ore and an estimated 65.6 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Mont Wright Mine is owned by ArcelorMittal SA, and is due to operate until 2052. The second largest iron ore-producing mine with an estimated iron ore production of 16.6 million tonnes and an estimated 25.22 mmtpa of ROM, was the Carol Lake Mine located in Quebec. The Carol Lake Mine is owned by Rio Tinto, and is due to operate until 2081.
Bloom Lake Mine located in Quebec was the third-largest mine, the Scully Mine located in Newfoundland and Labrador was the fourth-largest mine, and the Mary River Project (ArcelorMittal) located in Nunavut was the fifth-largest mine, with a total iron ore production of 8.1 million tonnes, 4.2 million tonnes and 2.5 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Bloom Lake Mine, the Scully Mine and the Mary River Project (ArcelorMittal) had an estimated ROM production of 22.5 mmtpa, 0.29 mmtpa and 5.79 mmtpa respectively. The Bloom Lake Mine is owned by Champion Iron Ltd, the Scully Mine is owned by Tacora Resources Inc which is due to operate until 2047 and the Mary River Project (ArcelorMittal) is owned by Nunavut Iron Ore Acquisition Inc which is due to operate until 2040.
The five largest iron ore mines, i.e., Mont Wright Mine, Carol Lake Mine, Bloom Lake Mine, Scully Mine , and Mary River Project (ArcelorMittal), cumulatively produced approximately 53.4 million tonnes of iron ore, 119.40 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
