Voisey's Bay Mine in Newfoundland and Labrador, was the largest nickel-producing mine in Canada, producing approximately 39.4 thousand tonnes of nickel and an estimated 2 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Voisey's Bay Mine is owned by Vale SA, and is due to operate until 2034. The second largest nickel-producing mine with an estimated nickel production of 38.2 thousand tonnes and an estimated 4.86 mmtpa of ROM, was the Raglan Mines located in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Raglan Mines is owned by Glencore Plc, and is due to operate until 2027.
Sudbury Area Mine located in Ontario was the third-largest mine, the Coleman Mine located in Ontario was the fourth-largest mine, and the Thompson Mine located in Manitoba was the fifth-largest mine, with a total nickel production of 16.8 thousand tonnes, 15.6 thousand tonnes and 11.7 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Sudbury Area Mine, the Coleman Mine and the Thompson Mine had an estimated ROM production of 1.91 mmtpa, 0.66 mmtpa and 0.77 mmtpa respectively. The Sudbury Area Mine is owned by Glencore Plc which is due to operate until 2035, the Coleman Mine is owned by Vale SA which is due to operate until 2030 and the Thompson Mine is owned by Vale SA which is due to operate until 2032.
The five largest nickel mines, i.e., Voisey's Bay Mine, Raglan Mines, Sudbury Area Mine, Coleman Mine, and Thompson Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 121.7 thousand tonnes of nickel, 10.17 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
