Rainy River Gold Project in Ontario, was the largest surface and underground mine in Canada, producing approximately 14.51 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced silver (611.43 thousand ounces) in 2021. The Rainy River Gold Project is owned by New Gold Inc, and is due to operate until 2029. The second largest surface and underground mine with an estimated 7.89 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing silver (18.84 thousand tonnes), was the Nunavik Nickel Project located in Quebec. The Nunavik Nickel Project is owned by Jin Horoc Nonferrous Metal Group Co Ltd, and is due to operate until 2029.
Meadowbank Complex located in Nunavut was the third-largest mine, the Lac Des Iles Mine located in Ontario was the fourth-largest mine, and the Porcupine Mine located in Ontario was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 5.53 mmtpa, 4.02 mmtpa and 3.93 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Meadowbank Complex produced approximately 324.81 thousand ounces of gold, the Lac Des Iles Mine produced approximately 1.9 thousand tonnes of copper, and the Porcupine Mine produced approximately 284.62 thousand ounces of gold in the year 2021. The Meadowbank Complex is owned by Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd which is due to operate until 2027, the Lac Des Iles Mine is owned by Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd which is due to operate until 2032 and the Porcupine Mine is owned by Newmont Corp which is due to operate until 2035.
The five largest surface and underground mines, i.e., Rainy River Gold Project, Nunavik Nickel Project, Meadowbank Complex , Lac Des Iles Mine, and Porcupine Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 35.88 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
