China is the world’s largest coal producer and has the world’s fourth-largest coal reserves, after the US, Russia and Australia. Production increased in 2020 in comparison to 2019, despite a fall in the first two months of 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The majority of coal produced is of bituminous grade, followed by anthracite and lignite. China Shenhua Energy Co. Ltd, China National Coal Group Corp., Inner Mongolia Yitai Coal Co. Ltd and Yanzhou Coal Mining Co. Ltd are the major coal-producing companies in China, together produced 357Mt (million tonnes) coal during the first nine months of 2020.

Coal consumption in China

In 2020, coal consumption in China fell marginally due to the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak, which mainly affected demand in the first quarter of the year. Of the total country’s coal consumption, major was thermal coal, while metallurgical coal accounted for a significant share in 2020.

Coal consumption from the country’s power industry fell, owing to lower coal-based electricity generation in 2020. During the Q1 2020, the coal-based electricity generation in the country fell over Q1 2019, on the back of the nationwide lockdown.
