Impact of COVID-19 on coal mining in India

India is endowed with vast mineral deposits, including coal, iron ore, bauxite, manganese, copper, lead, zinc and limestone. The country’s coal mining industry has great potential, and provides basic raw materials to various industries, including steel and power. According to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy, India was the fifth-largest country globally and the third largest in Asia-Pacific in terms of proven coal reserves.

Despite the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, India’s coal production managed to grow in 2020, over the previous year. A strong performance of the country’s largest producer was from Coal India Limited (CIL).

Coal consumption in India

In 2020, coal consumption in India fell due to the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak, which has subdued industrial activities across the country. Of the total country’s coal consumption, majority was thermal coal in 2020, while metallurgical coal accounted for a significant share. In terms of end use, the power industry accounted for most of the consumption, followed by steel, cement and sponge and other industries in 2020.

Coal accounted for majority of the country’s electricity generation mix in 2020. The consumption from the country’s power industry fell owing to lower coal-fired electricity generation in 2020.
