Czech Republic: Five Largest Surface Mines in 2021

  • Tusimice Mine in Usti nad Labem, was the largest surface mine in Czech Republic, producing approximately 10.71 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Tusimice Mine is owned by Severoceske doly as, and is due to operate until 2029. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 9.25 mmtpa of ROM, was the Doly Bilina Mines located in Usti nad Labem. The Doly Bilina Mines is owned by Severoceske doly as, and is due to operate until 2056.

  • Vrsany Surface Mine located in Moravian-Silesian was the third-largest mine, the Jiri Mine located in Karlovy Vary was the fourth-largest mine, and the Sverma Mine located in Hradec Kralove was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 6.67 mmtpa, 6.3 mmtpa and 1.1 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Vrsany Surface Mine is owned by Czech Coal AS which is due to operate until 2052, the Jiri Mine is owned by Sokolovska uhelna, pravni nastupce, A.S. which is due to operate until 2028 and the Sverma Mine is owned by Czech Coal AS.

  • The five largest surface mines, i.e., Tusimice Mine, Doly Bilina Mines, Vrsany Surface Mine, Jiri Mine, and Sverma Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 34.04 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
