Tenke Fungurume Mine in Katanga, was the largest mine in Democratic Republic of the Congo, producing approximately 16.6 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (209.12 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Tenke Fungurume Mine is owned by CMOC Group Ltd;Bohai Industrial Investment Fund Management Co;Gecamines SA, and is due to operate until 2047. The second largest mine with approximately 9.47 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (83.56 thousand tonnes), was the Frontier Mine located in Katanga. The Frontier Mine is owned by Eurasian Resources Group Sarl;Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, Democratic Republic of Congo, and is due to operate until 2025.
Sicomines Copper-Cobalt Mine located in Katanga was the third-largest mine, the Kibali Mine located in Orientale was the fourth-largest mine, and the KOV Mine located in Katanga was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 7.81 mmtpa, 6.68 mmtpa and 6.25 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Sicomines Copper-Cobalt Mine produced approximately 170 thousand tonnes of copper, the Kibali Mine produced approximately 804 thousand ounces of gold and the KOV Mine produced approximately 193 thousand tonnes of copper in the year 2021. The Sicomines Copper-Cobalt Mine is owned by China Railway Group Ltd, the Kibali Mine is owned by Barrick Gold Corp;AngloGold Ashanti Ltd;Sokimo which is due to operate until 2037 and the KOV Mine is owned by Gecamines SA;Glencore Plc which is due to operate until 2029.
