Democratic Republic of the Congo: Five Largest Surface Mines in 2021

  • Tenke Fungurume Mine in Katanga, was the largest surface mine in Democratic Republic of the Congo, producing approximately 16.6 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (209.12 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Tenke Fungurume Mine is owned by CMOC Group Ltd;Bohai Industrial Investment Fund Management Co;Gecamines SA, and is due to operate until 2047. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 9.47 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (83.56 thousand tonnes), was the Frontier Mine located in Katanga. The Frontier Mine is owned by Eurasian Resources Group Sarl;Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, Democratic Republic of Congo, and is due to operate until 2025.

  • Sicomines Copper-Cobalt Mine located in Katanga was the third-largest mine, the KOV Mine located in Katanga was the fourth-largest mine, and the Kolwezi Mine located in Katanga was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 7.81 mmtpa, 6.25 mmtpa and 5.95 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Sicomines Copper-Cobalt Mine produced approximately 170.13 thousand tonnes of copper, the KOV Mine produced approximately 192.61 thousand tonnes of copper, and the Kolwezi Mine produced approximately 121.07 thousand tonnes of copper in the year 2021. The Sicomines Copper-Cobalt Mine is owned by China Railway Group Ltd, the KOV Mine is owned by Gecamines SA;Glencore Plc which is due to operate until 2029 and the Kolwezi Mine is owned by The Democratic Republic Of Congo;Gecamines SA;Eurasian Resources Group Sarl which is due to operate until 2036.

  • The five largest surface mines, i.e., Tenke Fungurume Mine, Frontier Mine, Sicomines Copper-Cobalt Mine, KOV Mine, and Kolwezi Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 46.08 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
