Aitik Mine in Norrbotten, Sweden, was the largest mine in Europe region, producing approximately 41.77 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (79.99 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Aitik Mine is owned by Boliden AB. The second largest mine with an estimated 41.45 mmtpa of ROM , was the Belchatow Mine located in Lodz, Poland. The Belchatow Mine is owned by PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA, and is due to operate until 2041.
Hambach Mine located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany was the third-largest mine, the Garzweiler Mine located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany was the fourth-largest mine, and the Maritsa East Mine located in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 39.69 mmtpa, 37.73 mmtpa and 31.69 mmtpa respectively, in 2021. The Hambach Mine is owned by RWE AG which is due to operate until 2043, the Garzweiler Mine is owned by RWE AG which is due to operate until 2046 and the Maritsa East Mine is owned by Bulgarian Energy Holding EAD which is due to operate until 2089.
