Sorgun Lignite Field Mine in Yozgat, Turkey, was the largest surface and underground coal-producing mine in the Europe region, producing approximately 5.1 million tonnes of coal and an estimated 6.72 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Sorgun Lignite Field Mine is owned by Karma Madencilik Insaat Sanayi ve Tic. A.S.. The second largest surface and underground coal-producing mine with an estimated production of 3.9 million tonnes of coal and approximately 5.18 mmtpa of ROM, was the Jilt Mine located in Gorj, Turkey. The Jilt Mine is owned by Complexul Energetic Oltenia SA.
CSA Mine located in Moravian-Silesian, Czech Republic was the third-largest mine, the Tuncbilek Mine located in Kutahya, Turkey was the fourth-largest mine, and the Banovici Mine located in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated coal production of 3.4 million tonnes, 2.7 million tonnes and 1.2 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The CSA Mine, the Tuncbilek Mine and the Banovici Mine had an estimated ROM production of 4.47 mmtpa, 3.57 mmtpa and 1.49 mmtpa respectively. The CSA Mine is owned by Czech Coal AS which is due to operate until 2022, the Tuncbilek Mine is owned by Turkish Coal Enterprises and the Banovici Mine is owned by Government of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina which is due to operate until 2022.
The five largest coal mines, i.e., Sorgun Lignite Field Mine, Jilt Mine, CSA Mine, Tuncbilek Mine, and Banovici Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 16.3 million tonnes of coal, 21.43 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
