Kvannevann Iron Ore Mine in Nordland, Norway, was the largest surface and underground mine in Europe, producing approximately 6.72 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Kvannevann Iron Ore Mine is owned by Leonhard Nilsen & Sonner AS, and is due to operate until 2025. The second largest surface and underground mine with an estimated 6.72 mmtpa of ROM, was the Sorgun Lignite Field Mine located in Yozgat, Turkey. The Sorgun Lignite Field Mine is owned by Karma Madencilik Insaat Sanayi ve Tic. A.S..
Jilt Mine located in Gorj, Romania was the third-largest mine, the CSA Mine located in Moravian-Silesian, Czech Republic was the fourth-largest mine, and the Tuncbilek Mine located in Kutahya, Turkey was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 5.18 mmtpa, 4.47 mmtpa and 3.57 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Jilt Mine is owned by Complexul Energetic Oltenia SA, the CSA Mine is owned by Czech Coal AS which is due to operate until 2024 and the Tuncbilek Mine is owned by Turkish Coal Enterprises.
The five largest surface and underground mines, i.e., Kvannevann Iron Ore Mine, Sorgun Lignite Field Mine, Jilt Mine, CSA Mine, and Tuncbilek Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 26.65 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
