Belchatow Mine in Lodz, Poland, was the largest surface coal-producing mine in the Europe region, producing approximately 31.5 million tonnes of coal and an estimated 41.45 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Belchatow Mine is owned by PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA, and is due to operate until 2040. The second largest surface coal-producing mine with an estimated production of 30.2 million tonnes of coal and approximately 39.69 mmtpa of ROM, was the Hambach Mine located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Poland. The Hambach Mine is owned by RWE AG, and is due to operate until 2042.
