Kemi Mine in Lapland, was the largest underground mine in Finland, producing approximately 2.19 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced chromium (580.25 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Kemi Mine is owned by Outokumpu Oyj. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 1.7 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing chromium (239.24 thousand ounces), was the Kittila Mine located in Lapland. The Kittila Mine is owned by Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd, and is due to operate until 2035.
Pyhasalmi Mine located in Northern Ostrobothnia was the third-largest mine, the Jokisivu Mine located in Satakunta was the fourth-largest mine, and the Talc Mine at Horsmanaho located in North Karelia was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.32 mmtpa, 0.19 mmtpa and 0.15 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Pyhasalmi Mine is owned by First Quantum Minerals Ltd, the Jokisivu Mine is owned by Dragon Mining Ltd which is due to operate until 2023 and the Talc Mine at Horsmanaho is owned by Elementis plc.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., Kemi Mine, Kittila Mine, Pyhasalmi Mine, Jokisivu Mine, and Talc Mine at Horsmanaho, cumulatively produced approximately 4.56 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
