Germany: Five Largest Underground Mines in 2021

  • Verbundwerk Hattorf Wintershall Mine in Hesse, was the largest underground mine in Germany, producing approximately 14.54 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced magnesium (2,970.75 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Verbundwerk Hattorf Wintershall Mine is owned by K+S AG, and is due to operate until 2056. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 11.32 mmtpa of ROM, was the Zielitz Mine located in Saxony-Anhalt. The Zielitz Mine is owned by K+S AG, and is due to operate until 2054.
