Impala Mine in North West, South Africa, was the largest underground platinum-producing mine in the world, producing approximately 696.4 thousand ounces of platinum and an estimated 8.46 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Impala Mine is owned by Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd, and is due to operate until 2035. The second largest underground platinum-producing mine with an estimated production of 410.9 thousand ounces of platinum and an estimated 6.17 mmtpa of ROM in 2021, was the Amandelbult Mine located in Limpopo, South Africa. The Amandelbult Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc, and is due to operate until 2040.
Rustenburg Complex located in North West, South Africa was the third-largest mine, the Crocodile River Mine located in North West, South Africa was the fourth-largest mine, and the Kroondal Mine located in North West, South Africa was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated platinum production of 383.4 thousand ounces, 379 thousand ounces and 282.8 thousand ounces, respectively, in 2021. The Rustenburg Complex, the Crocodile River Mine and the Kroondal Mine had an estimated ROM production of 2.53 mmtpa, 2.54 mmtpa and 7.94 mmtpa respectively. The Rustenburg Complex is owned by Sibanye Stillwater Ltd which is due to operate until 2052, the Crocodile River Mine is owned by Eastern Platinum Ltd and the Kroondal Mine is owned by Sibanye Stillwater Ltd which is due to operate until 2032.
The five largest platinum mines, i.e., Impala Mine, Amandelbult Mine, Rustenburg Complex, Crocodile River Mine, and Kroondal Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 2,152.5 thousand ounces of platinum, 27.64 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
