Mazaruni River Quarry in Cuyuni-Mazaruni, was the largest mine in Guyana, producing approximately 4.27 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Mazaruni River Quarry is owned by BK International Inc. The second largest mine with approximately 2.38 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing gold (145.11 thousand ounces), was the Aurora Gold Project located in Cuyuni-Mazaruni. The Aurora Gold Project is owned by Zijin Mining Group Co Ltd, and is due to operate until 2040.
Omai Bauxite Mine located in Demerara-Mahaica was the third-largest mine, the Karouni Project located in Cuyuni-Mazaruni was the fourth-largest mine, and the East Montgomery Mine located in Upper Demerara-Berbice was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 1.12 mmtpa, 0.57 mmtpa and 0.53 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Omai Bauxite Mine is owned by Bosai Minerals Group Co Ltd;Government of Guyana which is due to operate until 2071, the Karouni Project is owned by Troy Resources Ltd which is due to operate until 2025 and the East Montgomery Mine is owned by Government of Guyana.
The five largest mines, i.e., Mazaruni River Quarry, Aurora Gold Project, Omai Bauxite Mine, Karouni Project, and East Montgomery Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 8.87 mmtpa of ROM in 2021
