Bailadila Iron Ore Mines (Bacheli Complex) in Chhattisgarh, was the largest iron ore-producing mine in India, producing approximately 12.5 million tonnes of iron ore and an estimated 13.6 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Bailadila Iron Ore Mines (Bacheli Complex) is owned by NMDC Ltd, and is due to operate until 2051. The second largest iron ore-producing mine with an estimated iron ore production of 12.3 million tonnes and an estimated 13.41 mmtpa of ROM, was the Bailadila Iron Ore Mines (Kirandul Complex) located in Chhattisgarh. The Bailadila Iron Ore Mines (Kirandul Complex) is owned by NMDC Ltd, and is due to operate until 2039.
Jajang Rungta Mine located in Odisha was the third-largest mine, the Balda Block Iron Mine located in Odisha was the fourth-largest mine, and the Joda East Mine located in Odisha was the fifth-largest mine, with a total iron ore production of 10.2 million tonnes, 9.4 million tonnes and 9.2 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Jajang Rungta Mine, the Balda Block Iron Mine and the Joda East Mine had an estimated ROM production of 10.39 mmtpa, 9.75 mmtpa and 11.38 mmtpa respectively. The Jajang Rungta Mine is owned by JSW Steel Ltd which is due to operate until 2023, the Balda Block Iron Mine is owned by Serajuddin & Co. which is due to operate until 2033 and the Joda East Mine is owned by Tata Steel Ltd.
The five largest iron ore mines, i.e., Bailadila Iron Ore Mines (Bacheli Complex), Bailadila Iron Ore Mines (Kirandul Complex), Jajang Rungta Mine, Balda Block Iron Mine, and Joda East Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 53.6 million tonnes of iron ore, 58.50 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
