Anagni Quarry in Lazio, was the largest surface mine in Italy, producing approximately 0.69 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Anagni Quarry is owned by Della Marocca Costruzioni Group, and is due to operate until 2065. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 0.54 mmtpa of ROM, was the Olmedo Mine located in Sardegna. The Olmedo Mine is owned by Cogein Sannio Srl;Comtec SpA;Icofin Co.
Cucciago Quarry located in Lombardia was the third-largest mine, the Castellina Marittima Quarry located in Toscana was the fourth-largest mine, and the Carrara Quarry located in Toscana was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.22 mmtpa, 0.15 mmtpa and 0.06 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Cucciago Quarry is owned by Italcave S.P.A., the Castellina Marittima Quarry is owned by Knauf Gips KG which is due to operate until 2045 and the Carrara Quarry is owned by Bruno Lucchetti.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Anagni Quarry, Olmedo Mine, Cucciago Quarry, Castellina Marittima Quarry, and Carrara Quarry, cumulatively produced approximately 1.66 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
