Aktogay Project in East Kazakhstan, was the largest copper-producing mine in Kazakhstan, producing approximately 136.4 thousand tonnes of copper and an estimated 54.9 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Aktogay Project is owned by KAZ Minerals PLC, and is due to operate until 2045. The second largest copper-producing mine with an estimated copper production of 108.8 thousand tonnes and an estimated 27.47 mmtpa of ROM, was the Bozshakol Mine located in East Kazakhstan. The Bozshakol Mine is owned by KAZ Minerals PLC, and is due to operate until 2060.
Maleevsky Mine located in East Kazakhstan was the third-largest mine, the 50 Let Oktyabrya Mine located in Aktobe was the fourth-largest mine, and the Orlovsky Mine located in East Kazakhstan was the fifth-largest mine, with a total copper production of 52.5 thousand tonnes, 41.5 thousand tonnes and 31.1 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Maleevsky Mine, the 50 Let Oktyabrya Mine and the Orlovsky Mine had an estimated ROM production of 1.6 mmtpa, 2.55 mmtpa and 0.95 mmtpa respectively. The Maleevsky Mine is owned by Glencore Plc which is due to operate until 2025, the 50 Let Oktyabrya Mine is owned by Russian Copper Co and the Orlovsky Mine is owned by KAZ Minerals PLC which is due to operate until 2026.
The five largest copper mines, i.e., Aktogay Project, Bozshakol Mine, Maleevsky Mine, 50 Let Oktyabrya Mine, and Orlovsky Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 370.3 thousand tonnes of copper, 87.51 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
