Ambatovy Project in Atsinanana, was the largest mine in Madagascar, producing approximately 4.73 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced nickel (38 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Ambatovy Project is owned by Sumitomo Corp;Korea Resources Corp, and is due to operate until 2044. The second largest mine with approximately 3.53 mmtpa of ROM, was the Marovinsty Mine located in Atsinanana. The Marovinsty Mine is owned by Etablissements Gallois S.A..
QMM’s Mineral Sands Mining Project located in Anosy was the third-largest mine, the Ilakaka Mine located in Ihorombe was the fourth-largest mine, and the Bemanevika Mine located in Boeny was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.67 mmtpa, 0.19 mmtpa and 0.14 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The QMM’s Mineral Sands Mining Project is owned by Rio Tinto;Government of Madagascar, the Ilakaka Mine is owned by World sapphire group and the Bemanevika Mine is owned by Kraomita Malagasy S.A..
