MHaoudat Mine in Tiris Zemmour, was the largest surface mine in Mauritania, producing approximately 4.85 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The MHaoudat Mine is owned by Societe Nationale Industrielle et Miniere. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 4.75 mmtpa of ROM, was the Kedia D'Idjill Mine located in Tiris Zemmour. The Kedia D'Idjill Mine is owned by Societe Nationale Industrielle et Miniere.
Guelb el Rhein Mine located in Tiris Zemmour was the third-largest mine, the Tasiast Mine located in Dakhlet Nouadhibou was the fourth-largest mine, and the Tasiast 24k Project located in Dakhlet Nouadhibou was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 4.26 mmtpa, 3.31 mmtpa and 3.26 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Guelb el Rhein Mine is owned by Societe Nationale Industrielle et Miniere, the Tasiast Mine is owned by Kinross Gold Corp which is due to operate until 2032 and the Tasiast 24k Project is owned by Kinross Gold Corp which is due to operate until 2033.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., MHaoudat Mine, Kedia D'Idjill Mine, Guelb el Rhein Mine, Tasiast Mine, and Tasiast 24k Project, cumulatively produced approximately 20.42 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
