Micare Mine in Coahuila, was the largest coal-producing mine in Mexico, producing approximately 6,124 thousand tonnes of coal and an estimated 6.7 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Micare Mine is owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico SAB de CV. The second largest coal-producing mine with an estimated coal production of 2,617 thousand tonnes and an estimated 5.14 mmtpa of ROM, was the Mimosa Unit Project located in Coahuila. The Mimosa Unit Project is owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico SAB de CV, and is due to operate until 2053.
Progreso Mine located in Coahuila was the third-largest mine, the Santa Barbara Coal Mine located in Coahuila was the fourth-largest mine, and the Tajo La Conquista Mine located in Coahuila was the fifth-largest mine, with a total coal production of 1,339 thousand tonnes, 42.6 thousand tonnes and 20.6 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Progreso Mine, the Santa Barbara Coal Mine and the Tajo La Conquista Mine had an estimated ROM production of 1.76 mmtpa, 0.06 mmtpa and 0.03 mmtpa respectively. The Progreso Mine is owned by Carbonifera De San Patricio, S.A. De C.V., the Santa Barbara Coal Mine is owned by Mineria y Energia del Noreste, S.A. de C.V. and the Tajo La Conquista Mine is owned by Mineria y Energia del Noreste, S.A. de C.V..
The five largest coal mines, i.e., Micare Mine, Mimosa Unit Project, Progreso Mine, Santa Barbara Coal Mine, and Tajo La Conquista Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 10,143.2 thousand tonnes of coal, 13.66 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
