Pena Colorada Mine in Colima, was the largest iron ore-producing mine in Mexico, producing approximately 3,900 thousand tonnes of iron ore and an estimated 12.3 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Pena Colorada Mine is owned by Ternium SA, and is due to operate until 2038. The second largest iron ore-producing mine with an estimated iron ore production of 3,259 thousand tonnes and an estimated 4.35 mmtpa of ROM, was the Hercules Mine located in Colima. The Hercules Mine is owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico SAB de CV.
Las Encinas Mines located in Michoacan was the third-largest mine, the Las Truchas Mine located in Michoacan was the fourth-largest mine, and the Cerro de Mercado Mine located in Durango was the fifth-largest mine, with a total iron ore production of 1,886 thousand tonnes, 1,605 thousand tonnes and 315.6 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Las Encinas Mines, the Las Truchas Mine and the Cerro de Mercado Mine had an estimated ROM production of 3.19 mmtpa, 4.24 mmtpa and 0.49 mmtpa respectively. The Las Encinas Mines is owned by Ternium SA which is due to operate until 2028, the Las Truchas Mine is owned by ArcelorMittal SA and the Cerro de Mercado Mine is owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico SAB de CV.
The five largest iron ore mines, i.e., Pena Colorada Mine, Hercules Mine, Las Encinas Mines, Las Truchas Mine, and Cerro de Mercado Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 10,965.6 thousand tonnes of iron ore, 24.57 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
