Penasquito Mine in Zacatecas, was the largest lead-producing mine in Mexico, producing approximately 77.1 thousand tonnes of lead and an estimated 35.9 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Penasquito Mine is owned by Newmont Corp, and is due to operate until 2032. The second largest lead-producing mine with an estimated lead production of 27.1 thousand tonnes and an estimated 2.62 mmtpa of ROM, was the Saucito Mine located in Zacatecas. The Saucito Mine is owned by Industrias Penoles SAB de CV, and is due to operate until 2025.
Fresnillo Mine located in Zacatecas was the third-largest mine, the Los Gatos Mine located in Chihuahua was the fourth-largest mine, and the Cieneguita Project located in Chihuahua was the fifth-largest mine, with a total lead production of 19 thousand tonnes, 18.6 thousand tonnes and 16.7 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Fresnillo Mine, the Los Gatos Mine and the Cieneguita Project had an estimated ROM production of 1.96 mmtpa, 0.92 mmtpa and 5.88 mmtpa respectively. The Fresnillo Mine is owned by Industrias Penoles SAB de CV which is due to operate until 2027, the Los Gatos Mine is owned by Gatos Silver Inc which is due to operate until 2031 and the Cieneguita Project is owned by Pan American Goldfields Ltd which is due to operate until 2029.
The five largest lead mines, i.e., Penasquito Mine, Saucito Mine, Fresnillo Mine, Los Gatos Mine, and Cieneguita Project, cumulatively produced approximately 158.5 thousand tonnes of lead, 47.29 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
