Penasquito Mine in Zacatecas, was the largest zinc-producing mine in Mexico, producing approximately 214.3 thousand tonnes of zinc and an estimated 35.9 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Penasquito Mine is owned by Newmont Corp, and is due to operate until 2032. The second largest zinc-producing mine with an estimated zinc production of 80.5 thousand tonnes and an estimated 2.39 mmtpa of ROM, was the Velardena Project located in Zacatecas. The Velardena Project is owned by Industrias Penoles SAB de CV, and is due to operate until 2034.
Saucito Mine located in Zacatecas was the third-largest mine, the Tizapa Mine located in Mexico City was the fourth-largest mine, and the Fresnillo Mine located in Zacatecas was the fifth-largest mine, with a total zinc production of 41.1 thousand tonnes, 39.6 thousand tonnes and 32.7 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Saucito Mine, the Tizapa Mine and the Fresnillo Mine had an estimated ROM production of 2.62 mmtpa, 0.98 mmtpa and 1.96 mmtpa respectively. The Saucito Mine is owned by Industrias Penoles SAB de CV which is due to operate until 2025, the Tizapa Mine is owned by Industrias Penoles SAB de CV which is due to operate until 2029 and the Fresnillo Mine is owned by Industrias Penoles SAB de CV which is due to operate until 2027.
The five largest zinc mines, i.e., Penasquito Mine, Velardena Project, Saucito Mine, Tizapa Mine, and Fresnillo Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 408.2 thousand tonnes of zinc, 43.86 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
