Sentinel Copper Mine in North-Western, Zambia, was the largest copper-producing mine in the Middle East and Africa, producing approximately 59.5 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021 and an estimated 248.7 thousand tonnes of Copper in 2021. The Sentinel Copper Mine is owned by First Quantum Minerals Ltd and is due to operate until 2041. The second largest copper-producing mine with an estimated copper production of 218.2 thousand tonnes and 33.91 mmtpa of ROM, was the Kansanshi Mine located in North-Western, Zambia. The Kansanshi Mine is owned by First Quantum Minerals Ltd, and is due to operate until 2041.
Lumwana Copper Mine located in North-Western, Zambia was the third-largest mine, the Palabora Mine located in Limpopo, South Africa was the fourth-largest mine and the Nchanga Copper Mine located in Copperbelt, Zambia was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated copper production of 98.9 thousand tonnes, 22 thousand tonnes and 11.1 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Lumwana Copper Mine, the Palabora Mine and the Nchanga Copper Mine had an estimated ROM production of 30.47 mmtpa, 8.59 mmtpa and 9.8 mmtpa respectively. The Lumwana Copper Mine is owned by Barrick Gold Corp which is due to operate until 2048, the Palabora Mine is owned by HBIS Group Co Ltd which is due to operate until 2039 and the Nchanga Copper Mine is owned by Vedanta Resources Ltd which is due to operate until 2024.
The five largest copper mines, i.e., Sentinel Copper Mine, Kansanshi Mine, Lumwana Copper Mine, Palabora Mine, and Nchanga Copper Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 598.9 thousand tonnes of copper, 142.27 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
