Sukari Mine in Red Sea, Egypt, was the largest surface and underground mine in Middle East and Africa, producing approximately 13.13 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced gold (415.37 thousand ounces) in 2021. The Sukari Mine is owned by Egyptian Mineral Resource Authority;Centamin Plc, and is due to operate until 2033. The second largest surface and underground mine with an estimated 11.71 mmtpa of ROM, was the Kriel Mine located in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The Kriel Mine is owned by Seriti Resources Holdings Pty Ltd, and is due to operate until 2035.
Zibulo Mine located in Mpumalanga, South Africa was the third-largest mine, the Marikana Mine (Lonmin) located in North West, South Africa was the fourth-largest mine, and the Nchanga Copper Mine located in Copperbelt, Zambia was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 10.14 mmtpa, 10 mmtpa and 9.8 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Zibulo Mine is owned by Thungela Resources Ltd;Inyosi Consortium which is due to operate until 2029, the Marikana Mine (Lonmin) is owned by Sibanye Stillwater Ltd which is due to operate until 2037 and the Nchanga Copper Mine is owned by Vedanta Resources Ltd;ZCCM Investment Holdings Plc which is due to operate until 2025.
The five largest surface and underground mines, i.e., Sukari Mine, Kriel Mine, Zibulo Mine, Marikana Mine (Lonmin), and Nchanga Copper Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 54.77 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
