Moma Titanium Minerals Mine in Nampula, was the largest surface mine in Mozambique, producing approximately 27.12 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced titanium (1,601.26 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Moma Titanium Minerals Mine is owned by Kenmare Resources Plc, and is due to operate until 2121. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 13.13 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing titanium (17.72 thousand tonnes), was the Chibuto Project located in Gaza. The Chibuto Project is owned by Anhui Foreign Economic Construction (Group) Co Ltd;Empresa Mocambicana de Exploracao Mineira, SA, and is due to operate until 2037.
Moatize Coal Mine located in Tete was the third-largest mine, the Benga Project located in Tete was the fourth-largest mine, and the Chirodzi Coal Mine located in Tete was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 11.8 mmtpa, 2.74 mmtpa and 1.44 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Moatize Coal Mine is owned by Jindal Steel & Power Ltd;Empresa Mocambicana de Exploracao Mineira, SA which is due to operate until 2036, the Benga Project is owned by Tata Steel Ltd;International Coal Ventures Pvt. Ltd. and the Chirodzi Coal Mine is owned by Jindal Steel & Power Ltd which is due to operate until 2039.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Moma Titanium Minerals Mine, Chibuto Project, Moatize Coal Mine, Benga Project, and Chirodzi Coal Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 56.22 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
