Husab Uranium Mine in Erongo, was the largest surface mine in Namibia, producing approximately 10.89 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Husab Uranium Mine is owned by China Africa Development Fund;China General Nuclear Power Corp;Epangelo Mining Company (Pty) Ltd., and is due to operate until 2041. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 10 mmtpa of ROM, was the Rossing Mine located in Erongo. The Rossing Mine is owned by Government of Namibia;Iran Foreign Investment Co.;Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Ltd;China National Nuclear Corp, and is due to operate until 2035.
Mining Area 1 Mine located in Karas was the third-largest mine, the Orange River Mine located in Karas was the fourth-largest mine, and the Otjikoto Mine located in Otjozondjupa was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 6.21 mmtpa, 3.73 mmtpa and 3.36 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Mining Area 1 Mine produced approximately 216 thousand carats of diamond, the Orange River Mine produced approximately 65.14 thousand carats of diamond, and the Otjikoto Mine produced approximately 197.57 thousand ounces of gold in the year 2021. The Mining Area 1 Mine is owned by Government of Namibia;Anglo American Plc;Government of Botswana which is due to operate until 2042, the Orange River Mine is owned by Government of Namibia;Anglo American Plc;Government of Botswana which is due to operate until 2024 and the Otjikoto Mine is owned by B2Gold Corp;EVI Gold (Pty) Ltd. which is due to operate until 2027.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Husab Uranium Mine, Rossing Mine, Mining Area 1 Mine, Orange River Mine, and Otjikoto Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 34.2 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
