Tiebaghi Mine in South Province, was the largest surface mine in New Caledonia, producing approximately 1.43 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced nickel (13.63 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Tiebaghi Mine is owned by SOCIETE TERRITORIALE CALEDONIENNE DE PARTICIPATION INDUSTRIELLE;Nippon Steel Nisshin Co Ltd;Eramet SA. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 1.11 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing nickel (17 thousand tonnes), was the Koniambo Nickel Project located in North Province. The Koniambo Nickel Project is owned by Societe Miniere du Sud Pacifique SA;Glencore Plc, and is due to operate until 2038.
Poum Project located in North Province was the third-largest mine, the Ouaco Mine Center located in North Province was the fourth-largest mine, and the Nepoui-Kopeto Project located in North Province was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 1.05 mmtpa, 0.91 mmtpa and 0.77 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Poum Project produced approximately 9.93 thousand tonnes of nickel, the Ouaco Mine Center produced approximately 16.11 thousand tonnes of nickel, and the Nepoui-Kopeto Project produced approximately 7.26 thousand tonnes of nickel in the year 2021. The Poum Project is owned by SOCIETE TERRITORIALE CALEDONIENNE DE PARTICIPATION INDUSTRIELLE;Eramet SA;Nippon Steel Nisshin Co Ltd, the Ouaco Mine Center is owned by Societe Miniere du Sud Pacifique SA;POSCO Holdings Inc and the Nepoui-Kopeto Project is owned by Eramet SA;Nippon Steel Nisshin Co Ltd;SOCIETE TERRITORIALE CALEDONIENNE DE PARTICIPATION INDUSTRIELLE.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Tiebaghi Mine, Koniambo Nickel Project, Poum Project, Ouaco Mine Center, and Nepoui-Kopeto Project, cumulatively produced approximately 5.27 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
