Macraes Goldfield Mines in Otago, was the largest mine in New Zealand, producing approximately 4.91 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced gold (130.3 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Macraes Goldfield Mines is owned by OceanaGold Corp, and is due to operate until 2029. The second largest mine with approximately 2.05 mmtpa of ROM, was the Hunua Quarry located in Auckland. The Hunua Quarry is owned by Winstone Aggregates.
Waikato North Head Mine located in Northland was the third-largest mine, the Stockton Mine (Bathurst Resources Limited) located in West Coast was the fourth-largest mine, and the Te Kuiti Limestone Quarry located in Waikato was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 1.2 mmtpa, 0.99 mmtpa and 0.69 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Waikato North Head Mine is owned by BlueScope Steel Ltd, the Stockton Mine (Bathurst Resources Limited) is owned by Bathurst Resources Limited;Talley's Group Limited which is due to operate until 2032 and the Te Kuiti Limestone Quarry is owned by Graymont Ltd.
The five largest mines, i.e., Macraes Goldfield Mines, Hunua Quarry, Waikato North Head Mine, Stockton Mine (Bathurst Resources Limited), and Te Kuiti Limestone Quarry, cumulatively produced approximately 10.53 mmtpa of ROM in 2021
