Morenci Mine in Arizona, United States, was the largest copper-producing mine in the North America, producing approximately 169.45 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021 and an estimated 397.5 thousand tonnes of Copper in 2021. The Morenci Mine is owned by Freeport-McMoRan Inc and is due to operate until 2041. The second largest copper-producing mine with an estimated copper production of 159.4 thousand tonnes and 39.89 mmtpa of ROM, was the Kennecott Copper Project located in Arizona, United States. The Kennecott Copper Project is owned by Rio Tinto, and is due to operate until 2041.
Highland Valley Copper Mine located in British Columbia, Canada was the third-largest mine, the Safford Mine located in Arizona, United States was the fourth-largest mine and the Sierrita Mine located in Arizona, United States was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated copper production of 130.5 thousand tonnes, 120.2 thousand tonnes and 85.7 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Highland Valley Copper Mine, the Safford Mine and the Sierrita Mine had an estimated ROM production of 59.22 mmtpa, 39.87 mmtpa and 34.07 mmtpa respectively. The Highland Valley Copper Mine is owned by Teck Resources Ltd which is due to operate until 2040, the Safford Mine is owned by Freeport-McMoRan Inc which is due to operate until 2053 and the Sierrita Mine is owned by Freeport-McMoRan Inc which is due to operate until 2080.
The five largest copper mines, i.e., Morenci Mine, Kennecott Copper Project, Highland Valley Copper Mine, Safford Mine, and Sierrita Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 893.3 thousand tonnes of copper, 342.50 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
