Cortez Mine in Nevada, United States, was the largest surface and underground mine in North America, producing approximately 25.66 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced gold (735.28 thousand ounces) in 2021. The Cortez Mine is owned by Barrick Gold Corp;Newmont Corp, and is due to operate until 2032. The second largest surface and underground mine with an estimated 16.24 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing gold (3,609.73 thousand ounces), was the Carlin Mine located in Nevada, United States. The Carlin Mine is owned by Barrick Gold Corp;Newmont Corp, and is due to operate until 2033.
Rainy River Gold Project located in Ontario, Canada was the third-largest mine, the Nunavik Nickel Project located in Quebec, Canada was the fourth-largest mine, and the Turquoise Ridge Mine located in Nevada, United States was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 14.51 mmtpa, 7.89 mmtpa and 6.27 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Rainy River Gold Project produced approximately 611.43 thousand ounces of Silver, the Nunavik Nickel Project produced approximately 18.84 thousand tonnes of Copper, and the Turquoise Ridge Mine produced approximately 543.09 thousand ounces of gold in the year 2021. The Rainy River Gold Project is owned by New Gold Inc which is due to operate until 2029, the Nunavik Nickel Project is owned by Jin Horoc Nonferrous Metal Group Co Ltd which is due to operate until 2029 and the Turquoise Ridge Mine is owned by Newmont Corp;Barrick Gold Corp which is due to operate until 2040.
The five largest surface and underground mines, i.e., Cortez Mine, Carlin Mine, Rainy River Gold Project, Nunavik Nickel Project, and Turquoise Ridge Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 70.56 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
