Hjerkinn Mine in Oppland, was the largest underground mine in Norway, producing approximately 0.86 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (12.35 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Hjerkinn Mine is owned by Norsulfid A/S. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 0.44 mmtpa of ROM, was the Hammerfall Mine located in Nordland. The Hammerfall Mine is owned by Omya International AG.
Gruve 7 Mine located in Svalbard was the third-largest mine, the Traelen Mine located in Troms was the fourth-largest mine, and the Altermark/Knarrevik Mine located in Hordaland was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.09 mmtpa, 0.02 mmtpa and 0.01 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Gruve 7 Mine is owned by Store Norske Spitsbergen Grubekompani, the Traelen Mine is owned by BSG Mining LLC;Mineral Commodities Ltd which is due to operate until 2036 and the Altermark/Knarrevik Mine is owned by Norwegian Talc A/S;Omya International AG.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., Hjerkinn Mine, Hammerfall Mine, Gruve 7 Mine, Traelen Mine, and Altermark/Knarrevik Mine , cumulatively produced approximately 1.42 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
