OK Tedi Mine in Western Province (Fly), was the largest surface mine in Papua New Guinea, producing approximately 23.58 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The OK Tedi Mine is owned by Mineral Resources Development Co Ltd;Government Of Papua New Guinea, and is due to operate until 2030. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 8.66 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing magnesium (737.08 thousand ounces), was the Lihir Mine located in New Ireland. The Lihir Mine is owned by Newcrest Mining Ltd, and is due to operate until 2050.
Ramu Nickel Mine located in Madang was the third-largest mine, the Hidden Valley Mine located in Morobe was the fourth-largest mine, and the Simberi Mine located in New Ireland was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 6.35 mmtpa, 3.56 mmtpa and 2.39 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Ramu Nickel Mine produced approximately 33.27 thousand tonnes of nickel, the Hidden Valley Mine produced approximately 2,598.55 thousand ounces of silver, and the Simberi Mine produced approximately 73.72 thousand ounces of gold in the year 2021. The Ramu Nickel Mine is owned by Nickel 28 Capital Corp;Metallurgical Corporation of China Ltd;Mineral Resources Development Co Ltd;Jinchuan Group Ltd.;Jiuquan Iron and Steel (Group) Co Ltd;Jilin Jien Nickel Industry Co Ltd which is due to operate until 2034, the Hidden Valley Mine is owned by Harmony Gold Mining Co Ltd which is due to operate until 2028 and the Simberi Mine is owned by St Barbara Ltd which is due to operate until 2024.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., OK Tedi Mine, Lihir Mine, Ramu Nickel Mine, Hidden Valley Mine, and Simberi Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 44.55 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
