Impact of COVID-19 on coal mining in India
India is endowed with vast mineral deposits, including coal, iron ore, bauxite, manganese, copper, lead, zinc and limestone. The country’s coal mining industry has great potential, and provides basic raw materials to various industries, including steel and power. According to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy, India was the fifth-largest country globally and the third largest in Asia-Pacific in terms of proven coal reserves.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted several operations in the country, especially during the second quarter of 2020, with a strict nationwide lockdown. Although coal mining activity and its transportation were declared an essential service by the government, lower power demand disrupted supply, with rising inventories at both power plants and coal mines. However, production was revived in the following quarter, due to increasing demand, amid the easing of the pandemic restrictions.
