Impact of COVID-19 on Indonesia coal mining

Indonesia is a mineral-rich country, with significant deposits of coal, natural gas, petroleum, nickel, copper, tin, gold and bauxite, among others. It was the world’s sixth largest country in terms of proven coal reserves as of January 2020. Production fell due to the impact of COVID-19, which reduced coal demand both from domestic and exports markets. This has led the companies to reduce their guidance for the year. Indonesia’s strategic location and price advantage has made it a major exporter of low-quality thermal coal to the major importing hubs, primarily India, China and South Korea. Indonesia’s coal exports fell sharply in 2020 mainly due to lower export demand amidst the COVID-19 crisis.

Indonesia coal production

Indonesia is the world’s fourth-largest coal producer, after China, India and Australia. In 2020, Indonesia’s coal production fall, against the significant growth reported in 2019. Production fell due to the impact of COVID-19, which reduced coal demand both from domestic and exports markets. This has also led the Indonesian Coal Mining Association in July 2020 to advise coal miners to reduce production, given lower demand and export prices. As a result, companies such as PT Adaro Energy TbkPT Bukit Asam and PT Bumi Resources Tbk reduced their output in 2020.
