Al Jalamid Mine in Al Riyadh, was the largest surface mine in Saudi Arabia, producing approximately 9.8 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Al Jalamid Mine is owned by Saudi Basic Industries Corp;Saudi Arabian Mining Co, and is due to operate until 2045. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 9.6 mmtpa of ROM, was the Al Shamal Mine located in Northern Borders. The Al Shamal Mine is owned by Saudi Basic Industries Corp;The Mosaic Co;Saudi Arabian Mining Co, and is due to operate until 2045.
Ad Duwayhi Project located in Makkah was the third-largest mine, the Al Baitha Mine located in Al Qasim was the fourth-largest mine, and the Bulghah Mine located in Al Madinah was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 5.51 mmtpa, 5.19 mmtpa and 3.53 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Ad Duwayhi Project is owned by Saudi Arabian Mining Co which is due to operate until 2030, the Al Baitha Mine is owned by Alcoa Corp;Saudi Arabian Mining Co;Alumina Ltd which is due to operate until 2063 and the Bulghah Mine is owned by Saudi Arabian Mining Co which is due to operate until 2042.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Al Jalamid Mine, Al Shamal Mine, Ad Duwayhi Project, Al Baitha Mine, and Bulghah Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 33.63 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
