Grande Cote Project in Dakar, was the largest surface mine in Senegal, producing approximately 46.63 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced leucoxene (1,284.88 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Grande Cote Project is owned by Government of the Republic of Senegal;Eramet SA, and is due to operate until 2046. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 2.92 mmtpa of ROM, was the Taiba Phosphate Mine located in Kaffrine. The Taiba Phosphate Mine is owned by Indorama Corp Pte Ltd;Government of the Republic of Senegal.
Mako Gold Mine located in Tambacounda was the third-largest mine, the Matam Phosphate Mines located in Matam was the fourth-largest mine, and the Baobab Phosphate Project located in Dakar was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 2.59 mmtpa, 0.93 mmtpa and 0.13 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Mako Gold Mine is owned by Government of the Republic of Senegal;Resolute Mining Ltd which is due to operate until 2027, the Matam Phosphate Mines is owned by Societe Miniere de la Vallee du Fleuve Senegal and the Baobab Phosphate Project is owned by Baobab Mining and Chemicals Corporation SA.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Grande Cote Project, Taiba Phosphate Mine, Mako Gold Mine, Matam Phosphate Mines, and Baobab Phosphate Project, cumulatively produced approximately 53.2 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
