Tonkolili Mine in Western Area, was the largest surface mine in Sierra Leone, producing approximately 15.17 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Tonkolili Mine is owned by China Kingho Energy Group Co Ltd, and is due to operate until 2074. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 8.99 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing magnesium (121.07 thousand tonnes), was the Sierra Rutile Mine located in South Province. The Sierra Rutile Mine is owned by Government of Sierra Leone;Iluka Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2040.
SML Bauxite Mine located in South Province was the third-largest mine, the Pampana River Project located in Northern Province was the fourth-largest mine, and the Marampa Mine located in Freetown was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 1.81 mmtpa, 0.58 mmtpa and 0.47 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The SML Bauxite Mine is owned by Vimetco NV, the Pampana River Project is owned by Sunergy, Inc. and the Marampa Mine is owned by Gerald International Ltd;Government of Sierra Leone which is due to operate until 2050.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Tonkolili Mine, Sierra Rutile Mine, SML Bauxite Mine, Pampana River Project, and Marampa Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 27.01 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
