South Africa: Five Largest Copper Mines in 2021

  • Palabora Mine in Limpopo, was the largest copper-producing mine in South Africa, producing approximately 21,997 tonnes of copper and an estimated 8.6 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Palabora Mine is owned by HBIS Group Co Ltd, and is due to operate until 2039. The second largest copper-producing mine with an estimated copper production of 11,601 tonnes and an estimated 11.95 mmtpa of ROM, was the Mogalakwena Mine located in Limpopo. The Mogalakwena Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc, and is due to operate until 2040.

  • Nkomati Mine located in Mpumalanga was the third-largest mine, the Rustenburg Complex located in North West was the fourth-largest mine, and the Bafokeng-Rasimone Platinum Mine located in North West was the fifth-largest mine, with a total copper production of 4,409 tonnes, 1,158 tonnes and 1,116 tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Nkomati Mine, the Rustenburg Complex and the Bafokeng-Rasimone Platinum Mine had an estimated ROM production of 3.51 mmtpa, 2.53 mmtpa and 2.43 mmtpa respectively. The Nkomati Mine is owned by African Rainbow Minerals Ltd, the Rustenburg Complex is owned by Sibanye Stillwater Ltd which is due to operate until 2052 and the Bafokeng-Rasimone Platinum Mine is owned by Royal Bafokeng Platinum Ltd which is due to operate until 2050.

  • The five largest copper mines, i.e., Palabora Mine, Mogalakwena Mine, Nkomati Mine, Rustenburg Complex, and Bafokeng-Rasimone Platinum Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 40,281 tonnes of copper, 29.01 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
