Grootegeluk Mine in Limpopo, was the largest mine in South Africa, producing approximately 57.68 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Grootegeluk Mine is owned by Exxaro Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2041. The second largest mine with approximately 37.9 mmtpa of ROM, was the Sishen Mine located in Northern Cape. The Sishen Mine is owned by Exxaro Resources Ltd;Industrial Development Corporation (IDC);Sishen Iron Ore Company Community Development Trust;Anglo American Plc, and is due to operate until 2039.
Ergo Mine located in Gauteng was the third-largest mine, the AGA Surface Operations located in North West was the fourth-largest mine, and the New Vaal Mine located in Free State was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 24.38 mmtpa, 22.67 mmtpa and 21.63 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Ergo Mine is owned by DRDGOLD Ltd which is due to operate until 2035, the AGA Surface Operations is owned by Harmony Gold Mining Co Ltd;Franco-Nevada Corp which is due to operate until 2039 and the New Vaal Mine is owned by Seriti Resources Holdings Pty Ltd which is due to operate until 2040.
The five largest mines, i.e., Grootegeluk Mine, Sishen Mine, Ergo Mine, AGA Surface Operations, and New Vaal Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 164.27 mmtpa of ROM in 2021
