Mogalakwena Mine in Limpopo, was the largest nickel-producing mine in South Africa, producing approximately 15,449 tonnes of nickel and an estimated 12 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Mogalakwena Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc, and is due to operate until 2040. The second largest nickel-producing mine with an estimated nickel production of 8,016 tonnes and an estimated 3.51 mmtpa of ROM, was the Nkomati Mine located in Limpopo. The Nkomati Mine is owned by African Rainbow Minerals Ltd.
Union Mine located in Limpopo was the third-largest mine, the Impala Mine located in North West was the fourth-largest mine, and the Thembelani Mine located in North West was the fifth-largest mine, with a total nickel production of 4,600 tonnes, 3,945 tonnes and 3,858 tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Union Mine, the Impala Mine and the Thembelani Mine had an estimated ROM production of 2.57 mmtpa, 8.46 mmtpa and 2.19 mmtpa respectively. The Union Mine is owned by Siyanda Resources (Proprietary) Limited which is due to operate until 2033, the Impala Mine is owned by Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd which is due to operate until 2035 and the Thembelani Mine is owned by Sibanye Stillwater Ltd which is due to operate until 2039.
The five largest nickel mines, i.e., Mogalakwena Mine, Nkomati Mine, Union Mine, Impala Mine, and Thembelani Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 35,868 tonnes of nickel, 28.68 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
