South Africa: Five Largest Surface Iron Ore Mines in 2021

  • Sishen Mine in Northern Cape, was the largest surface iron ore-producing mine in South Africa, producing approximately 28 million tonnes of iron ore and an estimated 37.9 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Sishen Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc, and is due to operate until 2039. The second largest surface iron ore-producing mine with an estimated production of 12.8 million tonnes of iron ore and approximately 14.1 mmtpa of ROM, was the Kolomela Mine located in Northern Cape. The Kolomela Mine is owned by Anglo American Plc, and is due to operate until 2034.
