South Africa: Five Largest Underground Mines in 2021

  • Syferfontein Mine in Gauteng, was the largest underground mine in South Africa, producing approximately 9.3 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Syferfontein Mine is owned by Sasol Ltd. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 8.9 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (40.03 thousand tonnes), was the Black Mountain Mine located in Northern Cape. The Black Mountain Mine is owned by Exxaro Resources Ltd;Vedanta Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2024.

  • Khutala Mine located in Mpumalanga was the third-largest mine, the Impala Mine located in North West was the fourth-largest mine, and the Twistdraai Mine located in Mpumalanga was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 8.82 mmtpa, 8.46 mmtpa and 8.2 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Khutala Mine is owned by Seriti Resources Holdings Pty Ltd which is due to operate until 2033, the Impala Mine is owned by Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd which is due to operate until 2036 and the Twistdraai Mine is owned by Sasol Ltd which is due to operate until 2044.

  • The five largest underground mines, i.e., Syferfontein Mine, Black Mountain Mine, Khutala Mine, Impala Mine, and Twistdraai Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 43.68 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
