El Limon-Guajes Project in Guerrero, Mexico, was the largest gold-producing mine in the South and Central America, producing approximately 5.49 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021 and an estimated 450 thousand ounces of Gold in 2021. The El Limon-Guajes Project is owned by Torex Gold Resources Inc and is due to operate until 2028. The second largest gold-producing mine with an estimated gold production of 404 thousand ounces and 4.5 mmtpa of ROM, was the Fruta del Norte Project located in Guerrero, Mexico. The Fruta del Norte Project is owned by Lundin Gold Inc, and is due to operate until 2036.
Dolores Mine located in Chihuahua, Mexico was the third-largest mine, the Retamas Mine located in La Libertad, Peru was the fourth-largest mine and the Los Filos Mine located in Guerrero, Mexico was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated gold production of 170.1 thousand ounces, 165.7 thousand ounces and 130 thousand ounces, respectively, in 2021. The Dolores Mine, the Retamas Mine and the Los Filos Mine had an estimated ROM production of 7.96 mmtpa, 8.28 mmtpa and 4.32 mmtpa respectively. The Dolores Mine is owned by Pan American Silver Corp which is due to operate until 2025, the Retamas Mine is owned by Minera Aurifera Retamas S.A. and the Los Filos Mine is owned by Equinox Gold Corp which is due to operate until 2028.
The five largest gold mines, i.e., El Limon-Guajes Project, Fruta del Norte Project, Dolores Mine, Retamas Mine, and Los Filos Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 1,319.8 thousand ounces of gold, 30.55 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
