Chuquicamata Mine in Antofagasta, Chile, was the largest underground mine in South and Central America, producing approximately 79.47 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (350.98 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Chuquicamata Mine is owned by Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile, and is due to operate until 2058. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 64.09 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (463.04 thousand tonnes), was the El Teniente Mine located in Cachapoal, Chile. The El Teniente Mine is owned by Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile, and is due to operate until 2073.
Dacita Project located in Cachapoal, Chile was the third-largest mine, the Retamas Mine located in La Libertad, Peru was the fourth-largest mine, and the Cerro Lindo Mine located in Ica, Peru was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 11.92 mmtpa, 8.28 mmtpa and 6.87 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Dacita Project produced approximately 5.43 thousand tonnes of Copper, the Retamas Mine produced approximately 165.7 thousand ounces of Gold, and the Cerro Lindo Mine produced approximately 116.7 thousand tonnes of zinc in the year 2021. The Dacita Project is owned by Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile which is due to operate until 2030, the Retamas Mine is owned by Minera Aurifera Retamas S.A. and the Cerro Lindo Mine is owned by Votorantim SA which is due to operate until 2030.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., Chuquicamata Mine, El Teniente Mine, Dacita Project, Retamas Mine, and Cerro Lindo Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 170.63 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
