Sri Lanka: Five Largest Mines in 2021

  • Ranna Salt Mine in Southern, was the largest mine in Sri Lanka, producing approximately 0.85 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Ranna Salt Mine is owned by Raigam Wayamba Salterns Plc. The second largest mine with approximately 0.14 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing titanium (11.46 thousand tonnes), was the Pulmoddai Beach Project located in Eastern. The Pulmoddai Beach Project is owned by Lanka Mineral Sands Limited.

  • Galaha Mine located in Central was the third-largest mine, the Puttalam Salt Mine located in North Western was the fourth-largest mine, and the Ragedara Project located in Central was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.05 mmtpa, 0.04 mmtpa and 0.02 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Galaha Mine is owned by Margosa Graphite Ltd;Peraj Mining (Pvt) LTD which is due to operate until 2028, the Puttalam Salt Mine is owned by Raigam Wayamba Salterns Plc and the Ragedara Project is owned by Elcora Advanced Materials Corp..

  • The five largest mines, i.e., Ranna Salt Mine, Pulmoddai Beach Project, Galaha Mine, Puttalam Salt Mine, and Ragedara Project, cumulatively produced approximately 1.09 mmtpa of ROM in 2021
