Kiruna Mine in Norrbotten, was the largest underground mine in Sweden, producing approximately 26.31 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Kiruna Mine is owned by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB, and is due to operate until 2036. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 15.16 mmtpa of ROM, was the Malmberget Mine located in Norrbotten. The Malmberget Mine is owned by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB, and is due to operate until 2035.
Garpenberg Mine located in Dalarna was the third-largest mine, the Zinkgruvan Mine located in Orebro was the fourth-largest mine, and the Glanshammar Mine located in Orebro was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 3.18 mmtpa, 1.4 mmtpa and 0.38 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Garpenberg Mine is owned by Boliden AB which is due to operate until 2043, the Zinkgruvan Mine is owned by Lundin Mining Corp which is due to operate until 2031 and the Glanshammar Mine is owned by Omya International AG.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., Kiruna Mine, Malmberget Mine, Garpenberg Mine, Zinkgruvan Mine, and Glanshammar Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 46.44 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
