Winsford Rock Salt Mine in Cheshire, was the largest underground mine in United Kingdom, producing approximately 1.94 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Winsford Rock Salt Mine is owned by Compass Minerals International Inc, and is due to operate until 2048. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 0.99 mmtpa of ROM, was the Boulby Mine located in North Yorkshire. The Boulby Mine is owned by Israel Corporation Ltd.
East Leake Mine located in Nottinghamshire was the third-largest mine, the Ayle Colliery located in Northumberland was the fourth-largest mine, and the Kirkby Thore Mine located in Cumbria was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.57 mmtpa, 0.57 mmtpa and 0.5 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The East Leake Mine is owned by Compagnie de Saint-Gobain, the Ayle Colliery is owned by Ayle Colliery Co Ltd and the Kirkby Thore Mine is owned by Compagnie de Saint-Gobain.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., Winsford Rock Salt Mine, Boulby Mine, East Leake Mine, Ayle Colliery, and Kirkby Thore Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 4.57 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
